Gender Workstream

Oppressive gender norms and gender-based violence (GBV) negatively impact the health and nutrition of women and girls. A unified commitment across the humanitarian community to address these issues can greatly improve the quality and effectiveness of nutrition programs for women and girls in emergencies.

In emergencies, when food supplies are often affected, women and girls are more likely to experience undernutrition or malnutrition than men and boys. Women and girls face unique hurdles when trying to access humanitarian services, including insecurity and discrimination. Issues of privacy and displacement can also negatively affect a breastfeeding woman’s ability to feed her child as well as her own health. The Gender and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Workstream supports and guides nutrition practitioners to integrate gender equity and GBV risk mitigation into emergency nutrition programs and plays an active role within humanitarian conversations on gender and GBV risk mitigation.

Key Activities:

  • Assist the Technical Support Team in incorporating gender and GBV risk mitigation actions into nutrition interventions
  • Champion gender and nutrition within the wider nutrition sector – including engagement with Technical Working Groups, donors, and other key stakeholders
  • Strengthen the Technical Support Team’s capacity to address gender and GBV in emergencies
  • Identify, develop and disseminate best practices and lessons learned resources for nutrition practitioners on gender and GBV risk mitigation in nutrition emergencies
